Accidents on Main Rural Highways Related to Speed, Driver, and Vehicle

From this 1964 paper by David Solomon came the 85th percentile rule. The safest speed on a highway is that speed where out of 100 cars, 85 go slower than that speed, and 15 go faster. The 85th percentile speed is the sweet spot of safety.

One needs to be suspicious of the contributors to this paper. I have encountered several of them before. They do not know the scientific method or fundamental principles of physics. They systematically misapply stochastic methods and confuse dynamics with kinematics.
